Famous for its impressive flying buttresses and haunting gothic architectural style, construction on the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral began in 1163 and was not fully completed until 1345. The stamp of the many architects that worked on the cathedral is evident in the varying styles of the cathedral's towers, the west front, the famed rose window, and the great halls.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés Abbey (Abbaye Saint-Germain-des-Prés)
Founded in the year 558, this Paris church was originally built to house a religious relic. Burned and plundered repeatedly by the Normans, Saint Germain Abbey was rebuilt in 1014 and has served not only as a church, but also as a prison and a storage site for munitions. A Unique feature is the Abbey's choir, offering an early example of the flying buttresses that would be used throughout France during the gothic cathedrals of the 12th century.
